Britain- European dance magazine bans Israeli articles

The UK based Dance Europe magazine has banned an article from being published in its magazine because it was about an Israeli dance troupe. The magazine told the writer it would only publish the article if the dance company stated its opposition to the Israeli “occupation”.

The article was presented by freelance journalist Stephanie Freid on the Dance Drama in Tel Aviv.

Freid said she was quizzed about the dance compeny’s view on the Israeli occupation and asked whether it was government funded.

Dance Europe Editor Emma Manning told Freid that the article would only be published only by   Disclaimer saying the group opposed the occupation, settlements and everything else.

The website of the 17,500 circulation magazine includes a link to the website of the Palestine El-Funoun Popular Dance Troupe. Asked by the Jewish Chronicle why the Palestinian company was not required to provide a disclaimer against suicide bombing , head of advertising responded “There’s a reason for people to become    suicide bombers. Their land has been occupied.

The Dance Drama Company is a Tel-Aviv based organization that tries to integrate people from differing backgrounds and has reputation for staking out new territory and going beyond the familiar categories of story ballet and dance-theater.

The head of the dance company said that she was sure the magazine’s editors were simply anti-semitic and that the magazine was using the “occupation” as an excuse for anti-Semitism and this frightens me.
