Italy– Desecration of a Memorial Tree in Arezzo
On 25th January 2007, the International Holocaust Memorial Day, unidentified vandals defaced a small olive tree standing on a hill, the site of an 18th Century Jewish cemetery. This tree and a stone marker commemorate that ancient cemetery and are also the symbol of the Arezzo Jewish community.
These vandals cut all the branches off the tree and left two posters at the site: "10,100,100 Holocausts" and "Priebke Libero" (Free Priebke) and the Nazi symbol. Priebke is a notorious Nazi figure. The Mayor of Arezzo issued a severe reaction: "This is a most serious deed. Damaging an olive tree in the Jewish cemetery is an unequivocally racist act. The symbols of peace and tolerance have been desecrated".
