Britain - \'Sophie\'s Choice the musical\' sketch sparks outrage

The producers of Channel 4’s much-hyped comedy series The Kevin Bishop Show were forced to apologise this week after community leaders and Holocaust survivors branded one of the sketches “distasteful” and “disgusting”.

The first episode of the programme, broadcast last Friday night and subsequently available online, featured a skit entitled Sophie’s Choice the Musical, based on the 1982 film which sees a Nazi officer force an Auschwitz inmate to choose which one of her two children will be executed, her son or her daughter.

In the sketch, the show is interactive, meaning the decision is left to members of the audience who vote for which child should live and which should die.

Lord Janner, Chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “How disgusting, unpleasant and distasteful. Having to choose between two children to be killed is not a joyous arrangement.”

A spokesman for Channel 4 added: “The Kevin Bishop Show is a comedy programme that takes a humorous look at many aspects of the entertainment world.

“The sketch intended to satirise the increasing demand for audience interaction in popular culture and the publicity-grabbing themes of modern musicals. We believe Channel 4’s Friday night audience would understand this was the intention of the joke.”
