Slovakia - Slovakia denounces Hungarian Guard, calls on Europe to react

The Slovak Foreign Ministry criticized Hungarian authorities for having made it possible for several hundred new members of the extremist Hungarian Guard to take their oath on Saturday, and called on European institutions to start to deal with the issue.

"There should be no room in democratic Europe for the manifestations of aggressive nationalism, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and neo-fascism. These phenomena cannot be relatives, marginalized, nor can they be justified in any way," the ministry says in a statement.

It says the guard is a threat to the inhabitants of Hungary and neighboring countries, and it is also a challenge to Europe.

A representative of the extra-parliamentary Movement for a Better Hungary (Jobbik) that founded the guard told several Slovak media on Saturday that the guard should strive for autonomy for the Hungarian minority in southern Slovakia.
