<![CDATA[Britain - 'Troubling' rise in Jewish attacks]]> http://antisemitism.org.il/eng/events/45737/Britain_-_%27Troubling%27_rise_in_Jewish_attacks http://antisemitism.org.il/eng/events/45737/Britain_-_%27Troubling%27_rise_in_Jewish_attacks 05-02-2010 A record number of antisemitic attacks is "deeply troubling," Prime Minister Gordon Brown has warned.

More than 924 reports of bigoted violence and abuse were received last year by The Community Security Trust (CST).

The charity, which monitors antisemitism in Britain, said the figures marked the worst year since records began in 1984. They included violent street attacks, arson, egg-throwing, racist graffiti, website hacking and hate mail.

Researchers said the surge was fuelled by the ground invasion of Gaza by Israeli forces in January 2009. Almost a quarter of incidents (23%) included some form of reference to the controversial conflict. The fighting was marked by protests around the world, including ugly confrontations outside the Israeli Embassy in London.

In a statement released through the charity, Mr Brown condemned the attacks and said more must be done towards securing Israel and creating a Palestinian state.

He said: "Antisemitism is one of the most ancient of hatreds - and yet it constantly adapts to modern times, requiring ever greater vigilance from all of us who are determined to stand up for tolerance and for the truth.

"The increase in antisemitic incidents recorded by CST in the early part of last year is deeply troubling... We will stand firm against all those who would use anti-Israeli feeling as an excuse or disguise for antisemitism and attacks on the Jewish community."

The majority of incidents recorded by the CST, from violence to desecration of Jewish properties, took place in London (460), followed by Manchester (206), Hertfordshire (48) and Leeds (35).

They included an incident in which a Jewish man driving an electric wheelchair was rammed by a car after leaving a synagogue. The driver shouted "Jew, Jew" at him but he escaped with minor injuries. In Yorkshire, strips of bacon were arranged in the shape of a star of David and stuck the fence of a home where a Jewish family lived with the word "Jewboy" written underneath. A 12-year-old girl, the only Jew at her school, was attacked by a mob of up to 20 fellow pupils who pulled her hair and chanted: "death to Jews, kill all Jews."

Mark Gardner, of the CST, said: "These record figures show that antisemitism is an increasingly significant problem for British Jews. The trend must be reversed and we call upon decent people to speak out against antisemitism in all its forms."

Tyler Golden, who heads a publicity group at York University and who was a witness to the incident, told the "Shalom Life" website that the members of the Gilad Shalit activist group were sitting around a table with publicity material as part of their "Free the Palestinians from the Hamas" campaign that had been authorized by the university.

At approximately 4pm a number of people known to be hostile to Israel arrived and began haranguing the Jewish students. The argument quickly escalated and a group of 50 angry students began attacking the Jewish students while voicing anti-Israel and antisemitic slogans. Golden added that the Jewish students summoned the security staff and recorded the assailants on camera. In an attempt to prevent their being filmed, the assailants attacked two Jewish students. Complaints were submitted against the assailants and the university's security staff collected testimony.

The Jewish Defense League offered 500 dollars for anyone providing information that leading to the identification of the assailants. Meir Weinstein, the chairman of the organization in Canada, criticized the weakness of the Jewish leadership on Canadian campuses and called to alter the existing feeble policy. Marley Moseson, one of the leaders of the publicity group, told "Shalom Life" that the university had not taken the effective steps necessary in order to protect the students. It should be emphasized that last year students were attacked by a large group of anti-Israel students who stormed a room in which they were assembled and then proceeded to issue antisemitic remarks and threats.

The flyer features Tymoshenko’s photograph with the words “Don’t Vote for a Jew!”

It reprints an alleged facsimile by the prime minister’s father documenting his supposed Russian and Jewish background and asks why Tymoshenko is hiding her Jewish ancestry. The leaflet also features purported quotes by four individuals, including former presidential candidate Arseniy Yatseniuk, who claim Tymoshenko is Jewish. The flyer’s circulation is listed as two million copies.

It is unclear who is behind the smear campaign. Hryhoriy Nemyria, Ukraine’s vice prime minister, however, was quick to point fingers at Tymoshenko’s rival, opposition leader Victor Yanukovych.

<![CDATA[Britain - Police launch investigation into antisemitic Facebook group]]> http://antisemitism.org.il/eng/events/45734/Britain_-_Police_launch_investigation_into_antisemitic_Facebook_group http://antisemitism.org.il/eng/events/45734/Britain_-_Police_launch_investigation_into_antisemitic_Facebook_group 04-02-2010 Police have launched an urgent investigation into a horrific Facebook group that gave graphic details of antisemitic incidents perpetrated by its members against Ilford's Jewish community.

Loxford School of Science and TechnologyThe group, created by a student at Loxford School of Science and Technology, attracted more than 500 members in two weeks following its launch last month and featured teenagers boasting about engaging in antisemitic behaviour.

It featured messages from youths using language rife with spelling errors, profanities and teenage colloquialisms.

One girl wrote: "Jews are the ones that killed prophets in the past. Dirty filthy scum-bags. No wonder they have the curse of Allah upon them. Burn Jew burn."

Another stated: "OMG! ii Saw a Jew Todaii ii Swearr downn Weariingg Dahh Hatt He Lookedd At Me Liike Man Knowsz Me [sic]."

She went on to describe screaming obscenities at the man and rudely telling him to go away.

In a further disturbing post, a girl bragged about aggressively confronting a Jewish woman in Argos after she was "looking at me". She wrote: "Looool i Had a Fight Wif 1 Urgh in Argos [sic]."

The Jewish News was informed about the group, created by a student at Loxford School, by a private investigator in Australia. It has since been removed from the popular social networking site.

The group was described by a Community Security Trust (CST) official as "one of the most shocking things I have ever seen".

A spokeswoman from Redbridge Council, speaking on behalf of Loxford School, said the school was contacted about the group and then immediately reported it to Facebook and the police.

The spokeswoman said: "The student concerned has been dealt with and the school has taken disciplinary action. There is an ongoing police investigation so we are unable to comment further."

Ilford police confirmed it had "received an allegation regarding antisemitic material being published on a social networking website".

A spokeswoman told the Jewish News that the police are investigating and inquiries continue.

Mike Gardner, director of communications at the CST, said he was left "utterly chilled" by the casual way that the youths displayed their antisemitism.

He said: "It shows how new media is now facilitating the most shocking

antisemitism among groups of youngsters, as if hatred and violence and gross ignorance were all just a part of their normal lives.

"Anybody who wants to understand how antisemitism can be transmitted today should study this online group closely, but they will need a strong stomach to do so."

Authorities in the Austrian capital are currently assessing whether to introduce a special owner's license for dog breeds that are considered especially dangerous or aggressive, a measure that has incensed many dog owners in Vienna.

Wuff magazine had issued fliers showing two puppies, a labrador retriever and a pit bull terrier. The pit bull bears a yellow star in the shape of the Star of David with the word 'evil' on it.

The publishers reacted to the criticism by saying they would replace the star with a red circle in the future.

The Jewish Community Protection Service (SPCJ) tallied 832 antisemitic acts in 2009, up from 474 a year earlier. Most involved graffiti and threatening gestures; about 17 percent involved vandalism and violence.

The group said that 354 took place in January 2009 alone, when Israel ended a three-week offensive against Palestinian militant group Hamas in response to rocket attacks from Gaza.

France is home to Western Europe's largest communities of Muslims and Jews. Flare-ups of antisemitic acts have often coincided with Mideast violence.

In the past, Lazio supporters used to call antisemitic slogans and to brandish signs with inscriptions against Jewish during the games of their team. This happened before FIFA and the local association took measures against the team whom audience expressed racist messages.

In a statement he published, he precised that his remark was not antisemitic, but rather an expression "found in the French people's mouth for hundreds of years."
